VSF Submariner Guide: Date vs No-Date, 40mm vs 41mm and QC

Compare VSF Submariner-style date and no-date layouts, 40mm and 41mm proportions, movements, bezels, bracelets and reference-specific QC checks.

At a glance

Compare VSF Submariner-style date and no-date layouts, 40mm and 41mm proportions, movements, bezels, bracelets and reference-specific QC checks.

A VSF Submariner-style watch should be chosen by layout and proportions first: date or no-date, 40mm or 41mm, black or colored configuration, then movement and individual QC. These choices change the dial balance, case profile, bracelet fit, and the number of components that must be inspected.

This guide compares the practical differences among common Submariner-style configurations without treating every generation as the same watch. Use it alongside the current VSF Submariner catalog and verify the precise reference stated on each product page.

Date or no-date Submariner?

The first choice is visual. A no-date dial has a clean, symmetrical layout with no date window or magnifier. A date model adds a calendar display at three o’clock and a magnifying lens over the window. Neither is universally better; each creates a different set of priorities.

Configuration Main advantage Extra QC points
No-date Simple, balanced dial Marker alignment, dial printing, rehaut and bezel symmetry
Date Daily calendar function Date centering, font, magnification, lens position and changeover

A no-date watch removes several possible alignment variables, but it still requires careful inspection. A date watch gives useful functionality, yet the window, date disc, and magnifier must work together visually. Decide which layout you prefer before comparing factory details.

40mm versus 41mm case families

Stated diameter tells only part of the story. Newer 41mm-style cases can use different lug, bracelet, and clasp proportions from earlier 40mm-style cases. The result may feel broader, more tapered, or more balanced even when the one-millimeter diameter difference sounds minor.

Compare these measurements and shapes:

  • case diameter without the crown;
  • lug-to-lug length;
  • case thickness and crystal height;
  • lug width and bracelet taper;
  • end-link shape and fit;
  • clasp length and extension mechanism.

Use a watch you already own as the baseline. Measure it and note where its lugs sit on your wrist. A larger diameter can still wear comfortably when the lugs and bracelet curve well; a smaller case can feel long if its end links project outward.

Common reference layouts

Listings often identify Submariner-style watches with reference numbers associated with a particular generation. The number should help define the target design, not serve as the only product specification.

  • 114060-style: commonly associated with a 40mm no-date layout and the broader-lug proportions of that generation.
  • 124060-style: commonly associated with a 41mm no-date layout, revised case proportions, and a newer bracelet relationship.
  • 116610LN-style: commonly associated with a 40mm date layout and black ceramic-style bezel.
  • 126610LN-style: commonly associated with a 41mm date layout and newer-generation proportions.

Confirm that the dial, hands, bezel, case, bracelet, clasp, and movement belong to the same intended generation. A listing title can be correct while one specification or reused image belongs to another version.

Movement selection for date and no-date models

Movement labels should match the functions shown on the dial. Date configurations may be advertised with a VS3235-style movement, while no-date configurations may use a movement adapted for the simpler display. Ask whether the crown has an unused date-setting position and how the supplied movement differs from the date version.

For every movement, verify:

  1. winding feel and crown engagement;
  2. time-setting direction and hand movement;
  3. date-setting and changeover on date models;
  4. power-reserve expectations and whether they were measured;
  5. timegrapher rate, amplitude, beat error, and test position;
  6. availability of movement photos and future service.

Read the VSF Factory guide for movement-label context. A caliber name narrows the specification, but it does not guarantee the condition of an individual watch.

Submariner bezel and insert checks

The rotating bezel is one of the most visible and tactile components. Start with a centered, straight-on image. Check whether the 12 o’clock marker aligns with the dial, whether the insert sits evenly, and whether the numerals and minute markings have consistent filling.

Ask for a short video that turns the bezel through a full rotation and returns it to 12. Listen for consistency, watch for excessive backward play, and confirm that the marker settles where expected. Camera angle can create false misalignment, so compare more than one image before making a judgment.

Dial, rehaut, crystal and date inspection

Review the dial at full size under neutral lighting. Inspect the hour markers, coronet position, minute track, printing weight, lume application, hand length, and dust. Then compare the dial with the rehaut engraving and bezel marker using a properly centered image.

On date models, request more than one displayed date if possible. Check horizontal and vertical centering, numeral consistency, window shape, magnification, and lens placement. The date should not be judged from a highly tilted wrist shot.

Side-profile images reveal crystal height, bezel seating, crown-guard shape, crown position, and transitions between brushed and polished surfaces. These proportions often explain why two similar front views look different on the wrist.

Bracelet, clasp and extension checks

Inspect end-link gaps, link articulation, screw condition, brushing direction, polished edges, clasp alignment, and extension operation. Confirm that the bracelet and clasp shown in QC media match the ordered generation.

Ask whether sizing is included and whether removed links will be returned. If you provide a wrist measurement, leave room for normal swelling and personal comfort rather than requesting an exact, tight circumference.

Water-resistance expectations

A dive-watch appearance does not prove water resistance. The result depends on the individual crystal fit, crown tube, caseback, gaskets, assembly, and testing. If exposure to water matters, request a documented pressure test for that watch and understand the tested limit. Re-test after the case is opened.

VSF Submariner QC checklist

  • Reference generation and date or no-date layout confirmed
  • Case and bracelet measurements checked against a known watch
  • Dial, hands, rehaut, bezel and pearl reviewed from centered images
  • Date window and magnifier checked on date models
  • Movement label and crown functions confirmed
  • Bezel rotation shown on video
  • Bracelet, clasp, screws and extension inspected
  • Timegrapher reading reviewed
  • Individual pressure test requested if water use is planned

Finish with the complete pre-shipment QC checklist before approving the watch.

VSF Submariner FAQ

Is a no-date model easier to inspect?

It has fewer date-related variables, but bezel, dial, rehaut, case, bracelet, movement, and functional checks still matter.

Does 41mm always wear much larger than 40mm?

No. Lug shape, bracelet width, taper, end links, and case thickness influence fit. Compare complete dimensions rather than diameter alone.

Which version is best for a first replica Rolex-style watch?

Choose the layout you will enjoy wearing. A no-date black configuration is visually simple; a date model adds convenience. Individual QC is more useful than a universal model ranking.

Where can I compare other VSF Rolex families?

Use the VSF Rolex model comparison to compare Submariner, Datejust, GMT and Yacht-Master designs.

Editorial method

We separate listed specifications from observations that must be confirmed on the current production batch. Movement functions, dimensions, and configuration details are cross-checked against the product catalog; QC recommendations identify what a buyer should verify on the allocated watch.
